Yet it remains one of the most iconic pieces of writing ever. Refining word choice and eliminating the “fluff” is a careful and systematic process. Done well, your writing becomes memorable and easy to mentally process. Done poorly, your writing becomes insufferable to read. You impose a “cognitive burden” on the reader, i.e. it sucks to read.

My experience teaching students proved that most young people’s writing is bland. Employing the use of rhetorical devices such as metaphors and parallelism create impactful sentences that communicate much with little words. Inserting a rhetorical device in your writing also signals you are powerful communicator and good writer – both skillsets desirable by colleges.
